Vishay Intertechnology announced the launch of two new types of ceramic/quartz substrate UVC (short wave ultraviolet light) light-emitting diodes, VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120, for sterilization of medical, industrial and consumer electronics applications. Vishay Semiconductors VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120 have higher light intensity than the previous generation solutions, lower costs, and are suitable for efficient disinfection with a longer service life.

Under the condition of 250 mA, the typical light power of the recently released device reaches 37 mW, and the mW/$performance price ratio is 30% higher than that of the low-power LED, 12 times better than that of the previous generation solution. In addition, the VLMU35CR41-275-120 has a minimum light power of 30 mW at 250 mA, which is equivalent to the light intensity of the competing device at 350 mA.
The wavelength range of LED is 265 nm to 280 nm, and the typical wavelength is 274 nm. It is not only suitable for direct disinfection of surfaces, air and still water, but also the disinfection efficiency of VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120 is improved by 20% compared with the 280 nm solution. The device is a small 3.45 mm x 3.45 mm x 1.7 mm surface mount package with excellent heat dissipation performance, equipped with ceramic substrate and quartz window, 250 mA, and has a service life of 27,000 hours at 25 C.
VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120 are based on AlGaN technology and are specially used to replace low-voltage UVC mercury lamp, which is particularly suitable for miniaturization and compact design of devices. Typical end products include ear plugs, toothbrushes, water bottles, refrigerators, air purifiers, doorknobs, medical instruments, coffee machines, automatic teller machines, toilet seats, vacuum cleaners and other disinfection devices.
The DC forward current of the device reaches 300 mA, the forward voltage is as low as 5.2 V, and the emission angle is ± 60 °. VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120 meet RoHS and Vishay green standards, are halogen-free, suitable for reflow welding process, and their humidity sensitivity grade reaches Grade 3 of J-STD-020 standard.
