Wireless charging has become an integral part of today's battery-powered applications, bringing an easy-to-use, user-friendly experience to portable products across a wide range of industries. Infineon further expands its Wireless charging (WLC) controller IC product lineup with the introduction of the new WLC1150 Wireless charging Transmitter IC, providing a highly integrated, easy-to-design and cost-effective solution for applications requiring greater wireless power transmission capabilities.
This category mainly includes industrial-grade applications, healthcare devices, robots and drones, vacuum cleaners, power tools, docking stations and smartphone chargers that support the Qi standard Extended Power Profile (EPP).
With high energy efficiency, flexible thermal management design options, low electromagnetic interference (EMI), integrated adaptive foreign body detection (FOD), inverter control, and a number of other functions and features, the WLC1150 transmitter is able to meet the key requirements of these applications. The adaptive FOD is adjusted by quality factor, resonant frequency and power.
The transmitter supports a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 24V using a high-power proprietary charging protocol, enabling wireless charging up to 50W. The built-in fan motor step-down controller cools interface surfaces for thermal management during high power transfer. The product also comes with an integrated grid driver for inverters controlled by frequency, duty cycle and variable voltage.
The WLC1150 is powered by a programmable 32-bit Arm®Cortex®-M0 processor and is equipped with 128 KB flash memory, 16 KB random access memory, and various peripherals such as ADC, pulse width modulation (PMW), and timers. Its full-stack firmware offers numerous configurable options to customize system parameters such as FOD, in-band communication, sensing, protection, and more for a specific application through an easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) without code debugging, simplifying and increasing the efficiency of the overall configuration process. Paired with Infineon's ModusToolbox™ software and tools, developers can take advantage of the WLC1150's programmable features to develop unique and scalable wireless charging solutions that comply with proprietary protocols and the latest Qi standard.
The transmitter also integrates a USB Type-C powered (PD) controller that supports the latest USB-PD 3.1 Fast Charge standard and Programmable Power Supply (PPS) mode. The WLC1150 complies with the WPC Qi 1.3 standard Extended Power Profile (EPP), Basic Power Profile (BPP), and Proprietary Power Supply Extension (PPDE) requirements, and supports system charging via a fixed input from USB PD/PPS or DC power supply.
Regardless of the input configuration, this transmitter does not require a front-end DC-DC converter, helping to greatly improve system efficiency. In addition, it supports adjustable overvoltage protection (OVP), overcurrent protection (OCP) and overtemperature protection (OTP). The WLC1150 transmitter IC can be paired with the upcoming WLC1250 receiver IC for an end-to-end, proprietary wireless power transmission solution.
