NXP Semiconductor has released the industry's first secure tri-radio IW612 device that supports wi-fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and 802.15.4 protocols. The device frees consumers from the constraints of a single protocol ecosystem, allowing them to enjoy seamless interoperability across different ecosystems and wireless networking technologies. As part of its new line of radios, the new devices provide seamless, secure connectivity for smart home, automotive and industrial use cases. Developers benefit from the company's state-of-the-art coexistence capability, which allows for simultaneous support of three radios on a single device, reducing costs and development time. In addition, it supports new ground-breaking material connection protocols.

IW612 leverages the company's long history of leadership in providing security solutions to help address the ongoing security threats facing smart devices. The device provides secure startup, debugging, and wireless firmware updates for continuous protection and WPA3 security and hardware encryption engines.

"With IW612, developers can leverage different wireless connectivity protocols on a single device to create an easy-to-use, secure product for smart home, industrial and automotive use cases," said Larry Olivas, vice president and general manager of WIRELESS Connectivity Solutions at NXP Semiconductor. "From door locks and smart speakers to in-car entertainment and telematics, our products can now benefit from our three-radio solutions that address multiple technologies and ecosystems, including Matter. This provides a more cost-effective solution for developers while simplifying deployment for users."

Jonathan Collins, research director at ABI Research, said: "Interoperability has been a key challenge that has divided the smart home market for years, but mate-Enabled devices could change that." NXP's new monolithic devices enable developers to leverage Matter's supported connection protocols for their smart home applications and help accelerate Matter adoption. This, in turn, will improve consumer availability by making smart devices easier to connect to and providing more choice among the interoperable devices they can use."

The device is an ideal solution for border routers, Bridges, and gateways in smart homes that need to connect Thread or Bluetooth devices to the cloud via an integrated Wi-Fi 6 wireless network.
