Texas Instruments (TI) TPA3140D2 is an efficient Class D audio power amplifier used to drive bridged stereo speakers with a maximum power of 10 W / 6 ohm or 8 ohm per channel. Advanced EMI suppression technology with spread spectrum control and 1SPW modulation scheme can use inexpensive ferrite bead filters at the output, while meeting EMC requirements to reduce system cost. The TPA3140D2 not only gets comprehensive short-circuit and overload protection, but SpeakerGuard's speaker protection circuit also includes an adjustable automatic gain limit (AGL), an adjustable power limiter, and a DC detection circuit to protect the connected speakers. AGL can adjust the maximum output voltage without signal clipping, thereby enhancing speaker protection and audio quality. DC detection and pin-to-pin, pin-to-ground and pin-to-power short circuit protection circuits can protect the speaker from the output DC and pin short circuit produced in production. The output is also fully protected against GND, PVCC, and output to output. Short circuit protection and thermal protection include automatic recovery function. The TPA3140D2 can drive stereo speakers down to 4ohm impedance. The company said that the high efficiency of TPA3140D2 (90% at 8 ohm load) eliminates the need for an external heat sink, and TPA3140D2 will be able to output full power on a 2-layer PCB.
