EPC introduces GaN FeT-based 150 ARMS motor driver reference design

EPC9186 is a three-phase BLDC motor driven inverter that adopts EPC2302 eGaN®FET. It supports a wide input DC voltage of 14 V~ 80 V. High-power EPC9186 supports applications such as electric scooters, small electric vehicles, agricultural machinery, forklifts and high-power drones. The gallium nitride device based EPC9186 inverter reference design enhances motor system performance, accuracy, torque and the ability to achieve longer range for high power applications.

          

The EPC9186 uses four EPC2302s in parallel at each switch position, providing a maximum output current of up to 200 Apk. The EPC9186 contains all the critical functional circuits necessary to support the entire motor drive inverter, including the grid driver, the regulated auxiliary power supply rail for auxiliary power management, voltage, temperature detection, accurate current detection, and protection functions. The reference design board can also be configured for multiphase DC/DC conversions, as well as support for phase and pin shunt current detection.

The reference design demonstrates the key advantages of motor drivers based on gallium nitride devices, including lower distortion to reduce noise, lower current ripple to reduce magnetic loss, lower torque ripple to improve accuracy, and lower filtering to reduce cost. EPC offers a complete demonstration suite, including an interface board that connects the inverter circuit board to the controller circuit board development tool, enabling rapid prototyping to shorten the design cycle.
