May 3 - Executives at Intel and Apple chip maker TSMC said a shortage of chips for chip-making machines is one of 22 problems in the global component shortage.
Because of the complexity and sophistication of manufacturing, buying new chip-making machines was never a quick process, and prior to the global pandemic, machine lead times were measured in months. Now, chip makers say that could take as long as two to three years.
The biggest problem is not with cpus and Gpus, but with more common chips, such as display driver chips and power management chips. These relatively low-tech chips are used in a large number of devices, making them more vulnerable to shortages.
